As your asphalt pavement reaches its end of service life, it may require removal of some or all, with either partial or full depth milling.

Although asphalt pavement is extremely durable, in time, all pavements will need resurfacing. Since merely installing new asphalt over existing pavement is rarely an option, the old pavement must be removed first. The traditional method is a complete removal and haul-off of the existing pavement. However, in many cases, asphalt milling or asphalt reclamation is the better option. While we can provide full removal and replacement, during the more than 35 years that APM Paving has been in business, we have found that milling or reclamation is often the best choice for removing existing pavement.

What is asphalt milling?

Asphalt milling involves the use of a milling machine to remove pavement to a controlled depth. We control the depth very precisely, removing only the exact amount of pavement required. The asphalt that is removed by milling can be taken to the processing plant for recycling.

When do we recommend milling?

Asphalt milling can be used for a variety of purposes, including full-depth removal. However, there are certain situations in which we would be more likely to recommend milling.

  • Refining pavement edges for an asphalt overlay
  • When the removal must be extremely precise, such as limiting removal to just the surface layer
  • Adjust the pavement’s slope or thickness
  • Correct drainage issues
  • Smooth transitions between connecting pavements

What is asphalt reclamation?

Asphalt reclamation, also called rubblizing, is commonly used as a cost-effective method of removing asphalt to its full depth. The process can be used to grind or pulverize the asphalt pavement as well as underlying layers on-site.

When do we recommend reclamation?

Like asphalt milling, reclamation has numerous applications. The following list does not include every possible use of asphalt reclamation, but it covers the most common situations in which we would recommend reclamation instead of milling.

  • The work site is a great distance from the asphalt plant. Reclamation can reduce hauling fees for the old asphalt, because we can recycle existing old materials in place.
  • Asphalt’s base or sub-base has become unstable. We can access base courses and can recycle old material in place, creating a new, efficient, and stabilized foundation.
  • Pavement needs to have its load-bearing capacity improved.
  • Sub-grade needs to have its resistance to frost heave improved.
  • Low or medium traffic volume pavement. Although asphalt reclamation has been used on highways and interstates successfully, it is more common to use the procedure on parking lots, residential streets or airstrips handling only lightweight aircraft.
